Disrespect of Ulama – A Prophecy of Times to Come
One the signs for the coming of the Hour is disrespecting and degradation of the Scholars of Islam. Prophetic narratives are numerous about this miserable condition. So as the followers of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH we must have respect for the Ulama which can be manifested in various ways, like serving them, attending their lectures and sermons, or simply seeking their advice in religious matters, etc. But more importantly not doing anything to disrespect them.
The following Ahadith tell us of this disease for the disregard of the Ulama of Haqq.
The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam made dua to Allah: “O Allah! Let not a time engulf me and let not these people experience a time wherein a learned person [alim] is not followed, and wherein a person of dignity is not respected. Their hearts will be the hearts of non-Arabs and their tongues will be the tongues of Arabs. [They are non-Arabs at heart but portray themselves to be Arabs] .” Narrated by Sahl bin Sa’d al Sa’idi in the Musnad of Imam Ahmed, and by Abu Hurairah in the Mustadrik of Imam al Hakim. Imam Dhahabi said in Talkhees, “It is sound.”
In another hadith the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “A time will come upon the people that the Ulama will be killed like dogs are killed. If only the Ulama could become insane at such a time. Narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib in Musnad Al Daylami.
In another hadith the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “Such a time will come upon the Ulama when death would be more dear to them than red gold”. Narrated by Abu Hurairah in Al-Hakim.
In another hadith the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “He is not from among us who does not respect our elders, nor shows mercy on our youth, nor appreciates the Learned Scholar.” – Al Targhib
In another hadith the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “Knowledge will be taken away and ignorance and chaos will become rampant, and haraj will become abundant. Someone asked him what he meant by haraj? He gestured with his hand indicating killing.
Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) says: “Whosoever harrasses any Alim has caused trouble and pain to Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and the one who causes trouble and pain to Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has caused trouble to Allah” [Al-I’tidaal by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandehlvi]
Imam Abdul Wahhab Sh’arani R.A. writes: “A covenant was made with us (Muslims) on behalf of Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam that we respect the Ulama, the saintly and the elders, whether they themselves act according to their knowledge or not. And that we shall continue to discharge their necessary rights and entrust their personal matter to Allah Ta’ala.
Whosoever fails to discharge the Ulama’s rights and fails to show them the necessary respect and honor is guilty of sin with Allah and His Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. The Ulama are the successors of the Ambiya (AS), the heirs of Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam, the bearers of the Shariah and they are His servants.
So if anyone insults them, they insult Allah and His Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. This is an act of disbelief. Now think for yourself, the king appoints someone as his ambassador. The king will with attention listen to this ambassador and debar the insulter from his court.
On the other hand, the king will make a favorite out of that man who showed respect and honor to his ambassador and who discharged the rights due to his emissary” [Al-I’tidaal by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandehlvi]
Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “In a certain house of Bani Israil, there was a female dog that was about to give birth to puppies. A guest arrived at the house. The dog decided that she would not bark at the guest that night so as to cause him trouble. However from inside the her womb, the puppies began to bark. Then Allah Ta’ala revealed: This is the example of that Ummah which will come after you. The foolish ones of that Ummah will overcome and subdue its Ulama”. [Al-I’tidaal by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandehlvi]
Maulana Abdul Hayy RA writes in his “Fatawa”: “If the object of one who disgraces and causes pain to the Ulama is because of their knowledge of Deen, then the jurists have passed a fatwa of Kufr against him. Even if he has any other evil object in mind, there too is no doubt in that person being a Fasiq, sinful person, worthy of Allah’s anger and deserving of His punishment in this world and the Hereafter” – [Al-I’tidaal by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandehlvi]
Fatawa Alamgiri states: “There is fear of kufr i.e. becoming a disbeliever, for the person who holds hatred against any Alim without any acceptable, clear reason”. [Al-I’tidaal by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandehlvi]
